Arizona, Day Five

Friday:  Morning wake-up as usual, though did change breakfast and had Raisin Bran instead of eggs.  Made our morning rounds to Diablo Stadium to get the daily newspaper.  Not looking forward to today's game as it may be their last.  They need to win two games in order to continue forward.  First game was in Mesa at Hohokam Stadium, home of Chicago Cubs.  Boys started out strong and stayed that way.  Unfortunately, Michael is officially done being catcher as his hand is still quite swollen and purple.  Perhaps he will be able to run in a future game, but for this game he coached first and third bases.  Game ended 8-7 in our favor.  The Cardinals like to make things close but this time they eeked one out.  Took team pictures after the game.  After the game we had a bit of time to kill.  Picked up Michael after he cleaned up to go shopping in Old Scottsdale but before that we were able to go inside his condo and check it out.  Quite a nice place.  I guess the guys stayed in this place last year too.  Not too shabby I must say.  We weren't able to shop too long as Michael needed to get back for the game.  Saw this Mission building, but it is currently under construction inside, so was not able to get inside.  Had lunch at Sugar Bowl again, as this was the closet place, and still had a good lunch.  The next game was also in Mesa a bit down the road, but still fields of the Cubs.  This was a 7 p.m. evening game.  Had dinner at Sonic before going to the game.  I know we have Sonic at home, but we never eat there.  On arriving to the field we find out that the the catcher and 2 or 3 other players got their info wrong and went to Diablo Stadium instead of Mesa, about 20 minutes away.  Fortunately, the game before us ran late, the fields had to be regroomed for our game, and the umps were taking a 20-minute break, so right when the game was to start, they guys showed up.  The opposing team said we could borrow their catcher's gear until our catcher showed, but fortunately we didn't have to do that.  This game was the most fun to watch, even without Michael playing. The final score was 19-2.  The team we played hadn't lost yet.  They were assured of a spot on playoff day, so they just put in their not so good pitchers, hence the high scoring game for us.  It was such a perfect night for a ball game.  They had concessions and I got to have my hot chocolate.  We sat behind home plate in a completely enclosed box.  The grandparents of one of the guys were with us and Nate's Mom too.  I know Nate by the name of Smiley and he plays for the Twins.  He is also best know as having the father who says such things like, "The table's set, bring them home for dinner." He's always good humor and a big team supporter.  We also had the wife of one of the umps (the one that came here from South Carolina on motorcycles).  The granddad had us play baseball trivia between innings like, can you name seven ways to reach first base?  We were quite comfortable at the game; no bugs, temperature was great, although the locals were wearing jackets or using blankets as it was so "cold."  I mean really...weenies.  After the game we came straight home and went to bed.  We were the last game to finish because of the late start and got in our cars around 10:30.  Now the games will be single elimination...
